If you wanted to buy a piece of real estate, you could go to the owner and contract for an option to buy that land at a specified price and at a particular time in the future. Stock options are contracts which work much the same way but are faster, riskier, and have become more complicated that the real estate variety. Options trading also include margin requirements and a very high level of investor sophistication. Options are securities just like stocks and bonds and are traded on an exchange. Unlike stocks and bonds, however, options derive their market value from the underlying asset; hence the term “derivatives”. There are some very complex trading strategies that can come into play when trading options which require experience beyond that of the sophisticated investor.
Golin Consulting, LLC has the option experience you need to understand the nuances of option risks and trading strategies. Mrs. Golin, our president, traded stock and index options for several years and was one of her firm’s largest option traders. She has never had a complaint or a problem.
